History of Halloween and Participation

Those that know me and my family know well that we do not participate in the Halloween Festivities. We being Christians feel as though we should not allow our children to dress up for anything ungodly. I know the argument will be that not all things are ungodly about Halloween. Not all people participate in Satanism, or Witchcraft or anything to that subject. They see Halloween as fun for their children. They will say that there are other holidays that are just as pagan as Halloween. My response to that is, If God does not convict you and your family on this matter then it is what is best for your family. God's conviction was placed on me and my family about this. We choose to follow Christ and listen to what he was telling us. I do not down grade or belittle anyone that participates in this holiday or any other. It is not my place to judge you on the choices you make for your family. Only God can be the judge on that. I have read some interesting history today of Halloween and want to share it. I have friends that were mixed up in occult practices and I know what they have told me on the matter and what I believe on the matter and what the Bible says on the matter. They have since been delivered out of that bondage and now follow Christ, praise the Lord.

The following information was borrowed from another source.

Halloween’s History
Halloween’s roots come from the ancient Celts, a tribe living about 2,000 years ago in the areas that are now Ireland, Great Britain and northern France. The Celts were first described as a fierce, warlike, terrifying people, many of whom would have strings of human heads tied on their bridles. Halloween was their main holiday .. a festival that honored the the end of the harvest. The celebration marked the beginning of the season of cold, darkness, and decay. It has some elements of a festival of the dead. The Gaels, the dead, could reach back through the veil that separated them from the living. The custom of wearing costumes and masks, was an attempt to copy the spirits or placate them.

Encyclopedia Britannica, 11 edition, Volume 12 says:
“It was a Druidic belief that on the eve of this festival, Saman, lord of death, called together the wicked souls that within the past 12 months had been condemned to inhabit the bodies of animals…” (pp. 847-858)

Yearbook of English Festivals by Dorothy Gladys Spicer says:
“All Hallows’ Eve, or All Hallow E’en, with its tradition of witches, ghosts, hobgoblins and spirits, its games and incantations, is still is a gay time for pranks and parties in many North country homes. Fun-loving Americans have borrowed from their British ancestors .. Hallow E’en games such as apple-bobbing, nut roasting, and tossing of apple parings. Transplanted to the New World soil, the old practices have become revitalized, and currently are observed with more enthusiasm than in the country of their birth.”

To ancient Druids, the end of October commemorated the festival of the waning year, when the sun began his downward course, and ripened grain was garnered from the fields.” “Samhain, or ‘Summer’s End,’ as this feast to the dying sun was called, was celebrated with human sacrifice, augury and prayers; for at this season spirits walked, and evil had power over souls of men.”
Not until the fourth century did the pagan vigil for the god of light give way to All Hallows, the mass for Christian saints; and not until the tenth, did the Druids’ death feast become All Souls’, the day of prayer for souls that had entered rest. Cakes for the dead were substituted for human sacrifice, fortune-telling for heathen augury, and lighted candles for the old Baal fires.”

Halloween in the United States
In the United States, many early American settlers brought with them various customs such as the above. However, because of Christianity among so many of the settlers, Halloween celebrations were not celebrated until the 1800′s, when several immigrants from Ireland and Scotland introduced their Halloween customs. They brought various beliefs about ghosts and witches with them. Other groups added their own cultural influences to Halloween customs. German immigrants brought a vivid witchcraft lore, and Haitian and African peoples brought their native voodoo beliefs about black cats, fire, and witchcraft.
All Saints Day, a day the seventh century church set aside for remembering early Christians who died for their beliefs, was first celebrated in the month of May. By the year 900, the date was combined with the pagan rituals to be celebrated November 1. Another name for All Saints Day was All Hallows. October 31 was known as All Hallows Eve, which was later shortened to Halloween. The church made a grave mistake trying to combine pagan worship with Christianity. This is not scriptural! Because of that unwise decision, Halloween remains a holiday in America today
Halloween is more than childish fun. Witches have eight special holidays during the year. Halloween is their day above all days. Witchcraft is not child’s play. It is an abomination to the Lord. Johanna Michelson former occultist and author of The Beautiful Side of Evil said, “For a true Christian to participate in the ancient trappings of Halloween is as incongruous as for a committed Satanist coming from blood sacrifices on Christmas Eve, to set up a nativity scene in his living room, singing Silent Night, Holy Night with sincere devotion to baby Jesus!”
One thing Halloween should not be for the Christian is a time of fear. It should be a time to rejoice in the fact that The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8). This is a time of spiritual warfare. October 31 should be spent in prayer for the community and children; a time of worship by singing praise to the Lord. This can be a good time to teach our children to sacrifice by not sharing in the rituals because you love the Lord. Whatever your family decides to do on this day, ask yourself, “Does it glorify the Lord?
Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils. 1 Corinthians 10:21
May prayer is that this will be of help to you or someone. God bless!!

Wonderful day with my MOM

Me and my Mom at a Mothers Day dinner

Today when I awoke it was 31 degrees out side, but I was glad that God allowed me to rise one more time to see the sun rise. Usually on Friday's it is the day that I spend with my Momma.  You see my mother is one of those ladies that never got her license and doesn't drive.  There are several of those ladies still here in the south that is just like her.  So today is the day that I take her around to do all her business in town.  Every week we go and pay bills and shop at thrift store. This is the most precious time that I have to spend with my mom.  She is getting up in years and she is all alone, my dad past years ago.  So you see it give me great pleasure to spend this time with her.  She gets to spend time with her grand-children, which gives her pleasure as well.  It blesses me each and every time I see her smile and have fun with the kids.  I know they bring joy to her heart.  Proverb 17:6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

The Bible says in Ephesians 6:2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

I feel as though I am honoring my mother by doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord and taking care of her, just as she took care of me. The promise that was giving was that your days will be long upon the land by honoring them.
I thank God each day that I have a Momma. I don't just have a mother, but she is a Momma. She listens and comforts when needed. For those of you that don't have that time with your mom, I feel sorry for you. For those of you that do have your mom, enjoy all the time you can with her.

Homeschool Journey "Corn Maze Field Trip 2013"

The good thing about homechooling is that we get to take field trips whenever we want.  I love that I have a homeschool group that we can enjoy going with. This week we went to the Eliada's Annual Corn Maze. They have awesome corn mazes, hay-bale maze, giant tube slides, tractor rides, corn cannons, spider web climbing, pumpkin patch, and a corn play box.  The kids really had a blast using all the amenities that was there for them to do.  Some of us with the littler ones went through the storybook maze.  We went through the maze, led by the pages of the adventure story of Spookley the Square Pumpkin. It was such a wonderful day to see all the kids enjoying the area.  Such joy that shows on each ones face.  Can't wait till our next trip. Below is some pictures of the fun.

The gang that went with us!

Another page in the story book.

Playing with my friends in the Corn Box.

Yes!!! We all loved the slides.

My little guy and Spookley the Square Pumpkin.

Even former homeschool, college students can have fun on the slides.
My daughter, gotta love that she can hang with the younger ones and still have fun.

Special thanks to our photographer, she is amazing with our kids even though some will not cooperate.(haha)

My prayer is that this will be a blessing to you and your families.  May God bless each and everyone of your homes and may the Lord always be with you each day.

Homeschooling Journey Day 36

Proverbs 4:12-15 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

Today in my little homeschool class the girls came over to do math. I enjoy teaching them, although I wonder if they love it or hate it. I do not let them just get by with what ever thy put down as a grade, if I feel as though they rushed through it or just aren't getting it I take the time to go back over it and let them do again. Math is one thing that you will use in this world and knowing how to use it will help. Today the oldest worked on how to add your hours and figure out your wages from your hours, and how to get your pay from piece work plus minimum pay for hours worked.  The middle child is working on turning fractions into decimals.  The youngest girl is working on multiplication.  She is learning her 2's and 3's.  We use Landmark Freedom Baptist Curriculum for the oldest girls math and a mixture of different things for the youngest.

As for me teaching my little one today we read from the The Jesus Story Book Bible A New Beginning from Genesis 6-9.  It tells of how Noah being a friend to God tried to warn the people of the coming Flood and no one listened.  God tells Noah to build an Ark and to take all the animals into it and his family to be saved from the flood.  The people still didn't listen and all perished except for those on the Ark.  We also read A is for Adam about the letter P which stands for PLAN which God always had for us.  He knows that we will sin and not listen just as He did in Noah's day, so he continues right on with the Plan He has made for us. We then started Return to the Willows which is about some adventures that Mole, Ratty Toad, and Badger encounter. Last but not least on the reading list today is Where's My T.R.U.C.K . My little loves this one we have read it over and over in the past 2 weeks and he is getting to where he is repeating the story back to me, and spelling of course T.R.U.C.K.

We then moved on to doing the fun stuff, school work.  We learned bout letter P, and our colors today.  He knows his colors but I found some cute little pumpkins to color your basic colors.  We then put them on a construction paper to display.  Then he took a larger pumpkin and put stickers on it to decorate it.  We do not celebrate halloween so, we do not carve pumpkins.  The stickers were cute on his paper pumpkin.

All in all we have had a very productive day.  Now its time to get ready for church.  A perfect ending to a perfect day.

My prayer is that this may be an encourage to someone out there not only to read their Bible but to also join in on a homeschooling journey of their own.

Gossip!!

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:29 - Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
Why then is it so hard for people not to gossip. I have been around so many people that just sit there and continue to talk like its nothing to be talking about something that doesn't involve them. I myself am guilty of being drug into that kind of situation. All I can do is ask God to forgive me on this matter. I have asked God to take that away from me and hold my tongue when it begins to say things it really shouldn't.

When dealing with Gossip you should think about what you are saying before it comes out, and whom it will hurt if said. I have seen so many times that once its said, you can't take it back. It is a hurt that stays and is seldom forgiven from the person hurt.  How do we know what is truth or not unless we see or witness it with our own eyes. We are minister grace unto those that we are talking to, not talk corruption.

Proverbs 20:19 - He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

If it sounds good to your ears you can just about bet that its not the truth. The devil will try and flatter you with sweet words just like honey. Sometimes that honey can be bitter. Watch out for those kinds of people. If you have secrets, by all means don't tell someone else, tell the only person you can tell and it will be safe, God above! If you know someone is a gossip, you should put them out of your life. The bible is clear, it tells us not to meddle with them. That is how we get pulled into the ring. Guard your secrets if you don't want the whole world to know before sun down.  My pastor once said " If you don't want everyone to know it you better not tell anyone but God, just because they are your friend doesn't mean it will be keep secret".

This is the perfect place for all to read, think upon these things which is being said in the chapter of:::::

Psalm 64

1 (To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.) Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:

3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:

4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.

5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?

6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.

8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.

10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

If you don't see a few people in your lives like this then your eyes maybe are blinded to, and that's a whole other lesson in the future. My prayer is to be a blessing to someone with this lesson.

Father,
I pray that I touch someone with this lesson today and that they receive the message that is here for them. I pray their tongue be keep clean and their hearts to, I pray they recieve a blessing in all that I write. In Jesus name these things do I pray. AMEN

Strength

This whole week I have been dealing with Strength.  There are times that even I get weak and need comfort knowing that I can turn to Him who provides my strength.  Philippians 4:13 says I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.  He is my strength, as the bible say.  I was sick at the beginning of this week and felt really bad cause there were things that I needed to do but couldn't, then later in the week I was wrestling with finding scripture for a project that I am doing and the devil keeps sending me the wrong way because of the subject it deals with....... So therefore I had to lean on him all week.  Not that I don't all the time, just a little more this week than normal.

2 Samuel 22:33 God is my strength and power ; He maketh my way perfect.

You see God gives me not only strength but also Power to over come what obstacles that the devil throws at me. Whether it be sickness or the devil keeping me from finding what I need. He makes the way perfect it says, so no matter what I do there is a perfect path for me laid out. He knows the out come.

Job 12:13 With Him is wisdom and strength, He hath counsel and understanding

He gives me wisdom and strength, He counsels and understands me.  When I read His word I get all kinds of wisdom that I apply to my everyday life.  When I am in need of someone to talk to and know that if I give it to the world it will spread like a wild fire, He is there to counsel me.  When I think that no one or anything understands, I know that He is there and He is understanding.

Psalm 18:1 I will love thee, O Lord, my strength.

When we show Him the love that He so deserves, because He died for us and that was an unconditional love, He gives us even more strength to conquer our obstacles.

Psalm 18:39 For thou hast girded me with strength unto the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.

Being thankful that He has brought me out of my battles, that I didn't have to face them alone. God's strength has always brought me through.  He can do the same for you if you just let Him in and grow inside of you. You will find that strength comes from above, only if you let Him in.

My prayer is that this will be a blessing to you.  I only pray someone learns from me, to lean on Him, when you need STRENGTH!.
